Landscapes

These works build on painting traditions and mid-century biomorphic, abstract, and surrealist landscapes like those of Roberto Matta and Yves Tanguy, creating environments in perpetual flux. They evoke shifting light across terrain, slow transformations of scale, erosion, weather, and time, and an ambiguous dialogue between natural and human-made forms. The series invites us to imagine a painting set in motion. How does a landscape evolve through time? Each composition carries an intrinsic energy, shaped by both its formal structure and the process of its creation.

Drawing on the legacy of color field painting, this series reimagines its principles within a dynamic digital context. Maintaining the 3:5 aspect ratio and framing motif from my [[[ ]]] collection, these works dissolve form into washes and gradients of color, punctuated by the subtle deterioration of pixels.

This collection was minted as twelve 1/1 works, with the thirteenth piece released as an edition and airdropped to any collector holding two or more works from the series.

Sound Frames

This series extends the explorations of the [o] Colorfields collection by introducing a sonic dimension. It considers the reciprocal relationship between sight and sound: What if an image could generate its own audio presence, and how might sound, in turn, shape the perception of the visual? In this imagined space, the works appear to emit sound or respond to it, creating a dialogue between auditory and visual experience.

This series evolves the concepts introduced in the [[[ ]]] collection, expanding its visual investigations into the realm of sound. Each work explores the interplay between audio and image, imagining a space where sound shapes the motion, rhythm, and perception of the visual field. The pieces suggest a fluid dialogue between what is seen and what is heard, creating immersive, time‑based compositions.

Pyramid Scenes

Pyramid Scenes is a series that is informed the structure and methodology of pyramid schemes, where value hinges on perception, position, and timing. Editions are minted in ascending order: the first collector holds a unique 1/1 at the top, while each subsequent work expands the base with larger editions “further down the pyramid.” This assembly reflects the speculative dynamics of crypto and art markets, where hierarchy, scarcity, hype, and social proof often define value.

The first thirteen works were minted between 2022 and 2023 on the now-defunct Versum marketplace. The series now continues on objkt.com, with 20 works released to date.

Artist Statement

I work with video sources to create non-static digital artworks influenced by painting traditions—abstraction, surrealism, biomorphism, and color field. My digital approach shares a painterly attention to mark, surface, texture, and composition. Digital tools become brushes; pixels are the pigment. I aim to evoke a sense of surface and materiality, bending the screen toward something that feels physical and analog. The looping GIF is an ideal medium—always in motion, eternal.

I often incorporate sound to extend the idea of perpetual motion. What if a piece emitted sound, or if sound drove its movement? How would that change the relationship between image and motion?

My work reflects an interest in time, space, and transformation—how landscapes, architecture, and geology shift with daylight and decay. I aim to heighten perception, drawing attention to visual details both mundane and spectacular..

Dr. Version (Stephen Hermann) is a motion-based visual artist, music producer, and sound designer whose work bridges moving image, audio composition, and immersive digital media. His practice emerged from graduate studies in studio arts at the University of Minnesota, where an early focus on painting developed alongside a growing interest with music production and sound. As a founding member of Sukpatch, he signed a Sony Music publishing deal and a record contract with the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal label.

In the late 90s, Hermann moved to New York City, where his focus shifted fully toward music production and sound design. There he established Explosion Robinson, producing custom music, sonic branding, and audio post‑production for advertising and media.

Visual art remained a continuous through line throughout his work, leading to the creation of Dr. Version, a hybrid practice where sound, motion, and color converge in digital form. His recent works translate the sensibilities of painting into time‑based media, generating perceptual spaces that oscillate between the abstract and the surreal. Hermann is an active creator and collector in the tezos based digital art community.
